Novel approach for time-dependent seismic hazard analysis and earthquake damage scenarios

The present project proposes an innovative, integrated, multidisciplinary study aimed at defining an innovative time-dependent seismic hazard assessment protocol, fundamental for the implementation of advanced and integrated strategy on seismic risk reduction and disaster management. This can lead to define structural design rules to ensure target safety levels considering time-dependent hazard models for short- and long-term time scales.

Modulation of A2A adenosine receptors as a neuroprotective strategy in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide and represents an important health concern in ageing societies. State-of-the-art treatments have mere symptomatic action and severe long-term side effects, strongly urging the quest for the development of neuroprotective therapies. Growing evidence indicates that neuroinflammation, mediated by microglia and astroglia, plays a crucial role in PD.

PREventive PLANning for disaster resilient territories

The project aims to reduce the risk and impact of natural disasters by contributing to the enhancement of territorial resilience and preparedness, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. Drawing from the 2016 earthquakes in the Apennines of Central Italy, the research investigates new approaches and methods to support policy makers and local authorities in risk-sensitive planning and in the elaboration of building-back-better strategies.

yieLding added valuE to Apennine Forest resources

During the last decades, the economic profitability of forestry in the Apennine mountains has been declining, due to multiple socio-economic and environmental reasons (e.g., general depopulation of mountain areas, reduction of the number of forestry operators). Despite this picture, forest ecosystems are still a potential economic driver,
especially for marginal rural mountain areas, where the forest is the most common source of the biomass.

Paleontology within an Integrated Stratigraphic COntext: Unraveling the evolutionary patterns of marine vertebrates in the extraordinarily productive fossil scenario of the Eo-Miocene strata of the Pisco Basin

First-order global climatic and oceanographic changes occurred from the middle Eocene to early Miocene (48-16 Ma), promoting the redistribution and partitioning of food resources and a consequential increase in diversity and disparity of marine vertebrates. Due to the scarcity of productive paleontological sites and the dearth of temporal

Innovative targeted therapy of glioblastomas based on new higly potent and selective dopamine D4 receptor antagonists

Glioblastomas (GBM) are the most common malignant brain tumors and are characterized by an aggressive invasive behavior associated with high drug resistance. Temozolomide is the only chemotherapeutic showing positive outcomes, but its efficacy is transient and occurs in a subgroup of patients. Thus, the clinical need is to
develop new specific anticancer agents targeting regulatory pathways outside the traditional chemotherapies.

The African turquoise killifish Nothobranchius furzeri: a new model of a diet-induced obesity

The prevalence of obesity is increasing at alarming rate worldwide. Obesity is a multifactorial disease generated by an alteration in balance between energy intake and expenditure, also dependent on genetic and non-genetic factors. Given the current increase in life expectancy, the prevalence of obesity also raises steadily among older

Talking HANDS: from a prototype to an effective and usable device

This proposal addresses the prototypal device Talking Hands, recently developed by the spin-off Limix of Unicam. The original idea was to create an assistive device able to translate pre-recorded hand gestures into speech in real time. This improved communication access was intended to positively affect the lives of the speech-impaired, easing their interaction at workplace, for healthcare services and in school environment.
