L'Unione offre numerose opportunità di finanziamento per la ricerca. Esistono cioè diversi strumenti finanziari che possono essere utilizzati per realizzare le proprie idee.

-  Ricerca: per chi intende avviare attività di ricerca finalizzate a generare nuove conoscenze o per le organizzazioni che desiderano sviluppare o potenziare la proprie capacità di ricerca.

- Innovazione: per le organizzazioni, pubbliche e private, interessate all’innovazione in termini di trasferimento tecnologico, accesso al capitale di rischio o servizi di supporto, realizzazione o miglioramento di processi produttivi, beni e servizi.

- Sviluppo di impresa: per coloro che puntano alla costituzione di una società innovativa, all’espansione o all’internazionalizzazione delle proprie attività o alla creazione di nuovi partenariati scientifici, commerciali e tecnologici.

I principali strumenti di finanziamento della ricerca e dell’innovazione sono rappresentati dai Programmi Quadro e, in parte, dai Fondi strutturali e di investimento e dal Fondo di coesione. Tuttavia, dato che la ricerca ha carattere trasversale e permea tutte le attività umane, anche gli altri fondi europei possono fornire sostegno a investimenti innovativi però in settori specifici.
